Buying Second Hand
Do your research
Unfortunately knock-off Reborns are very prolific, and scammers are getting better and better at photoshop. These dolls are not cheap, they are handmade works of art.
Research. Research. Research.
Request a safety photo/video
To make sure the seller has the baby in their possession, ask for a safety photo or video. This is a picture of the doll with an unusual item, or holding a piece of paper with the seller’s name and today’s date. Be careful to check if this has been photoshopped!
Ask for references
Reach out to the community through Facebook groups to ask for references for the seller you are buying from.
Know your prices
If someone is offering you a prototype quality doll for £150, that’s a huge red flag! These dolls are expensive, with basic ones starting around £150, and high end babies reaching into the thousands. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Pay via Goods and Services
I recommend paying via Paypal Goods and Services rather than bank transfer or Paypal Friends and Family. You may have to pay an extra 3%, but your money will be protected if you have been scammed and the doll does not arrive.
Does it come with COA/legitimate neck markings?
Knock-off Reborns are a huge issue in the community. Most new sculpts all come with Certificates of Authenticity. Sometimes, this paperwork can get lost, so check that the back of the neck has a legitimate marking, this is usually the sculpt or sculptor name and a ‘JD’ followed by a number. If in doubt, reach out to the sculptor or the community to see if they can identify for you whether a doll is legitimate.
